Many of our students begin their education in our purposefully designed Early Learning Center (ELC) in K3 or K4 and continue until graduation in Grade 12. Our students learn and play together, guided by an experienced, well-qualified faculty, who appreciate that individual students learn differently. It In our program it is recognized that students pass through definite stages of intellectual and physical development. These stages affect how students learn. Although this development is sequential and predictable, each child develops and learns at his or her own rate. Within the limitations of our program, accommodations are made to provide for these individual differences.

Student-teacher relationships are of critical importance in the learning process. We strive to build and maintain strong relationships between staff and students and their parents. When the school and family work together towards common goals and shared values, students learn the skills and virtues that characterize life-long learners. Our students have a strong commitment to not only their academic subjects but also to citizenship through sports, the arts and service to the community and the environment.

Parents are an important part of any child’s life and learning at school. We look forward to collaborating with you to enable each child to reach their full potential and experience life in our KAS community.

Early Learning Program (ELP) K3 and K4

Our ELP offers an opportunity for three and four year old children to socialize with others and become involved in appropriate developmental activities in a supportive environment. These activities include free and organized play, listening to and telling stories, arts and crafts, music and movement. Specific activities are designed to promote fine and gross motor skills. When the children are developmentally ready, reading readiness and math activities are introduced through stories, songs and games. The children are encouraged to explore materials and follow their curiosity.

The ELP curriculum follows a developmental continuum of important skills that form the basis of future learning. The K4 program prepares children to enter the full day kindergarten program- K5 Children attend specialist lessons in the library and PE. Our swimming program begins at K3. More information on the curriculum is available in the Early Years Handbook.

K5-G5 Curriculum

The K5-G5 curriculum is based on the AERO Standards, which are supported by the U.S. State Department Office of Overseas Schools. Our aim is to create well-rounded and balanced students who are committed to working to achieve academically. To support this goal, students learn English, mathematics, science and social studies with their homeroom teacher, whilst taking Urdu, art, ICT (computer and library), social learning skills and physical education with specialist teachers.

A major focus of our program is for students to be a pivotal part of their own learning.  Our students are encouraged to think critically and creatively and to be actively involved in the decision making regarding their learning and life at KAS.  Every elementary student (K3-G5) collaborates with their teachers to create a portfolio, set individual learning goals and reflect on their progress.  Our students take part in Student Parent Teacher conferences where learning is shared and celebrated.

Language Arts

The Language Arts curriculum teaches listening, speaking, reading, and writing as a unified discipline rather than as separate subjects. Students practice these important skills in every subject and materials are especially chosen to enhance learning in Social Studies and Science.

Literature is a key feature of our reading program.  Books are selected for their quality and used to teach comprehension skills, vocabulary, and thinking. Reading for pleasure is promoted through regular library borrowing. During the writing process, students write for a variety of purposes and incorporates   the use of appropriate grammar and spelling skills through student, peer and teacher editing.

Communication skills play an important part of a student’s success in every subject. Students are encouraged to talk about their learning and to keep learning journals. Students recognize the power of oral language, and they will use speech with increasing awareness and responsibility. Opportunities arise throughout the year for students to work individually or collaboratively to present their knowledge and the learning process to an audience. Our aim is to build confident young learners who can explain their thinking and learning to their peers, teachers and parents.

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

Information Communication Technology, includes the development of technology skills and the use of our library for research and pleasure. ICT is taught and promoted throughout the curriculum and modelled by homeroom and specialist teachers. Library lessons promote how to find the books on shelves and the digital search system to enhance research and reading choices. Reading is promoted in every classroom through classroom libraries. Students actively use the technology available in their classrooms and at home to enhance their learning opportunities.

Students experience a wide variety of visual media materials and respond to viewing experiences orally and in writing. Students will interpret visual media and recognize the power it plays in influencing thinking and behavior. Responsible use of technology, electronic information and social networking is therefore a core component of the program, as students begin to learn how to make informed choices in their personal viewing experiences.

In addition, students K5 through Grade 5 receive additional computer lessons in the elementary computer lab to develop and refine computer skills such as basic keyboarding and the use of various programs to enrich and present learning.

Mathematics

Our Mathematics program is designed to help students learn a wide range of mathematical concepts as well as insure knowledge of basic arithmetic skills. The emphasis is on understanding mathematical concepts. We teach problem solving, communication, reasoning, estimation, numbers, measurement, probability, fractions, decimals, patterns, geometry and relationships. Lessons are designed to stress real-life mathematical experiences rather than pages of extensive drills.  Students devote a substantial amount of math time using objects as models, and teachers present open ended questions that stimulate creative, complex thought.  Students share their mathematical thinking in Math Journals and writing and talking about mathematics are valuable learning and evaluation tools.

Science

The 2019 AERO Science curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards, a state- wide initiative in the USA. The four domains of Life Science, Physical Science, Earth & Space Science and Engineering Design are covered by these standards. Not only are the core ideas examined but also scientific practices and the connection between the domains and the core subjects are of equal importance. The aim is to inspire future generations of scientifically literate students.

Students will develop their observational skills by using their senses and selected observational tools. They will gather and record observed information in a number of ways and reflect on these findings to identify patterns or connections, make predictions, and test and refine their ideas. Students will explore the way objects and phenomena function, identify parts of a system, and gain an understanding of increasingly complex cause and effect relationships. They will examine change over time and will recognize that change may be affected by one or more variables.

Students will be aware of different perspectives and ways of organizing the world, and they will be able to consider how these views and customs may have been formulated. Students will use their learning in science to plan positive and realistic action in order to improve their welfare and that of other living things and the environment. Students will communicate their ideas or provide explanations using their own scientific experience and that of others.

Social Studies

The AERO Social Studies Framework is divided into eight standards as outlined below. KAS elementary faculty have designed topics of inquiry for study within this framework to enhance student knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live. Students develop the skills to inquire into how local and global historical events and practices have shaped government, culture and the environment. Connections are made to life as it is today in many countries across the globe, with a particular emphasis on Pakistan and home countries.

1.Time, Continuity, and Change

Students will understand patterns of change and continuity, relationships between people and events through time, and various interpretations of these relationships.

2. Connections and Conflict

Students will understand the causes and effects of interaction among societies, including trade, systems of international exchange, war, and diplomacy.

3. Geography

Students will understand the interactions and relationships between human societies and their physical environment.

4. Culture

Students will understand cultural and intellectual developments and interactions among societies.

5. Society and Identity

Students will understand social systems and structures and how these influence individuals.

6. Government

Students will understand why societies create and adopt systems of governance and how they address human needs, rights, responsibilities and citizenship.

7. Production, Distribution, and Consumption

Students will understand fundamental economic principles and ways in which economies are shaped by geographic and human factors.

8. Science, Technology, and Society

Students will understand how societies have influenced and been influenced by scientific developments and technological developments.

9. Pakistan Studies

Pakistan Studies is integrated within the Social Studies curriculum and allows students to learn about the country’s culture, history and geography so our students gain a better understanding and appreciation of our host country. Pakistan week is a highlight of the school year.

10. Learning Support

Throughout the year, teachers closely monitor data on student performance, attendance, and behavior. When a student experiences difficulty in achieving grade level benchmarks, the Student Support team may be consulted to provide academic support within the classroom and/or individualized or small group intervention for your child that uses evidence-based practices. The Learning Support team will collaborate with parents and teachers using a collaborative team approach to focus on promoting success, in order to help the child have a positive and challenging learning experience, while accessing the broader curriculum.

11. Social Learning Skills

The development of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) helps students improve academic performance. The Social Learning Skills classes, as part of the Student Support Program, seek to support all students in becoming the best version of themselves through the acquisition of the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to understand and manage emotions, to feel and show empathy for others, to establish and maintain positive relationships and to set and achieve goals.

The program is based on four competencies Social Awareness, Self-Awareness, Social Management (Relationship Skills), and Self-Management (Responsible Decision-Making). Students will engage in activities, reflections, mindfulness games, exercises, discussions and journaling. Students will also practice mindfulness in their daily academic and non-academic lives, develop prosocial qualities, and learn more about themselves as part of a schoolwide character education initiative.

12. Art

The aim of the elementary Art curriculum is for students to establish a foundation of self-awareness about their own interests and preferences in art.  Students will develop this interest by exploring and experimenting with a variety of tools, materials and techniques. They will exhibit confidence in choosing tools and materials that are appropriate for their artworks and that reflect their growing individual creative vision. Students will be aware that a piece of artwork requires thought, planning, effort and revision.

The AERO art curriculum is divided into four domains.

  1. Creating Art: Use the creative processes and the language of art to communicate through a variety of media and techniques.
  2. Historical and Cultural Context: Understand how art has shaped and preserved history and culture.
  3. Perception and Evaluation: Using the language of art, students critically analyze, derive meaning from, and evaluate artwork.
  4. Connections: Make connections between art, personal experience, and the world.

13. Urdu

The Urdu program at KAS follows the AERO world language standards. The elementary Urdu curriculum is designed for young language learners to build confidence and to take risks in language learning. Students engage in an interactive program that includes songs, puppets, games, and learning activities which build confidence and skills in listening and speaking for beginning students and reading and writing for the more advanced students. Research has shown that the length of time invested in learning a foreign language correlates with the resulting proficiency level. Therefore, when children start early and practice their language skills at home and at school students are more likely to reach a higher level of proficiency. Our beginning students are encouraged to communicate in Urdu outside the classroom with people in their household and local community. For Pakistani students, sharing stories and speaking with family members in Urdu promotes the importance of their language and its traditions.

14. Physical Education

The elementary physical education program emphasizes the development of skills in movement, object handling, games, team sports, dance, gymnastics and aquatics. Physical Education fosters the acquisition of desirable attitudes and behaviors that help the child learn to lead, play, work and live successfully with others in a group.

15. Music

The elementary music program is based on the domains outlined in the AERO music curriculum of perform, create and respond. The program is designed to provide students with opportunities to create and perform music while having a basic understanding and appreciation for the place of music within cultures across the global community. Lessons include singing, rhythm, listening and movement, moving towards more advanced skills of music theory, reading musical notation, how to play a chosen instrument and the art of performing.

School Life in Elementary

At KAS we believe in the total development of every student and to achieve this goal we offer a wide variety of experiences and activities beyond the academic program to meet the differing interests and developmental levels of our student body.  Each activity and event is designed to complement the academic program by bringing life to the academic objectives of the curriculum. These events allow students the opportunity to build deeper relationships with teachers and classmates, to experience student leadership, and to deepen each individual’s worldview. Students are involved in Citizenship Education, Student leadership, a House Competition, Service to the Community, the After School Club program and a variety of celebrations of important events throughout the year.

Citizenship Education

Citizenship education is a deliberate effort to cultivate civility, ethical behaviors, self-management skills and personal attributes that KAS community values in its students. KAS elementary have a yearly calendar with a monthly focus on core virtues such as kindness, respect, generosity, honesty, responsibility and independence. Citizenship also includes life skills such as social competencies to handle friendships and bullying, self-discipline and self-management skills to assist in managing and improving life at school, and individuals responsibilities in giving service to the local and global communities.

Student Leadership

Elementary Student Council (ESC)

The student council is a representative structure for students, through which they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students. The executives and grade representatives are elected by the students from G3-5.

Role of the elementary student council (ESC)

  • to promote a positive school atmosphere through pride and positive spirit
  • to provide students with leadership opportunities and preparation for local and global responsibilities
  • to represent the elementary students to the administration, faculty and KAS community
  • to organize events and raise funds for those causes chosen and supported by

House Prefects

Grade 5 students are House prefects. House events (explained below) give the prefects opportunities to practice their leadership skills.

House Competition

Events in the elementary school are organized by Houses. On arrival at KAS, elementary families are allocated to one of the four Houses.

  • Dragons (red) – Determination
  • Griffins (yellow) – Courage
  • Thunderbirds (blue) – Honor
  • Wyverns (green) – Loyalty

Students purchase House T-shirts and wear them on the designated days for House identity and spirit.

Students in Grade 5 are House Prefects. Prefects lead the younger children during House and some Community Service activities.

Service Learning and Community Service

Service Learning

Students engage in learning experiences aimed at developing the understanding that they have a responsibility to the wider community. Students actively participate in a thoughtfully organized service program that is integrated into our academic and citizenship programs. It is through service learning that the concepts of empathy and the need to pay kindness and good deeds forward are established.

Community Service

Elementary classes apply what they learn to initiating community service in two ways:

  1. In-School Service- individual classes or grades work together to serve people and the environment within the KAS community.
  2. School-Wide Community Service – all students (K3-G5) are involved in fundraising through a major activity to support organizations and projects in the wider local or global community.
After School Club Program

Each quarter, activities after school are offered by teachers to enrich the school program for grades K5-G5. These activities give students a chance to both explore different interests and provide challenges to broaden their skill set.  Activities include

  • sports – cricket, basketball, soccer, dodgeball and tennis
  • language based activities- becoming authors and treasure hunts
  • science activities – STEAM challenges and mad scientist
  • arts and crafts, technology, drama and cooking.
Celebration of Events

At the beginning of every school year the KAS events calendar is created to outline the monthly virtue focus, class assemblies and major events that will be celebrated. It is a tradition, now established yearly, to hold a Variety Show where students can perform and share their talents. We also have additional opportunities to perform through assemblies and concerts. Special days that we celebrate or give attention to in the curriculum are: Math Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas/winter holidays, Valentine’s Day, Global Play Day, Earth Day and International or Pakistan Day. During these celebrations it is understood that some families do not celebrate these events; however, we take the opportunity to use these events as a time to learn about different beliefs and cultures, and to broaden understandings and viewpoints leading to global citizenship.
